Etihad Airways Engineering, Airbus sign MOU for A380 MRO Services

Etihad Airways Engineering and Airbus have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a new MRO services offering for the A380.

Due to start in Abi Dhabi from 2017, the partnership will offer maintenance, engineering and upgrade work for third-party operators of the Airbus superjumbo.

In addition to heavy maintenance checks and upgrades installations, the aircraft OEM said all necessary consumable and expendable parts will be provided on-site by Satair, Airbus’ inventory management subsidiary.

In a statement, Airbus said the service will be useful to A380 operators already holding in-house MRO capabilities looking to offload some heavy checks and upgrades to third parties due to capacity constraints.

The MOU announcement builds on the existing cooperation between the two parties on the A380.

It recently saw Etihad Airways Engineering deliver its associate airline’s first A380 heavy maintenance C-check.

The future of the jet – the most expensive aircraft program in commercial aviation history – has been under scrutiny in 2016 after Airbus confirmed production cuts to the A380 from 2018.

Once implemented from 2018, the A380 will have a production of one aircraft per month, down from the current rate of 2.5 aircraft coming off the production line monthly.
